SOURCES/BACKGROUND: Defiance of the Federal court – On April 14th, the Trump administration openly defied a unanimous order from the Supreme Court by refusing to bring back Kilmar Abrego Garcia after erroneously deporting him to a prison in El Salvador. To date, Judge Xinis said, “what the record shows is nothing has been done.” During a court hearing for Rumeysa Ozturk, a student detained by ICE for writing an op-ed, a federal court judge raised similar concerns about the administration refusing to adhere to his orders and thereby instigating a “constitutional crisis.” In addition, Judge Boasberg finds ‘probable cause exists’ to hold Trump administration in contempt for violating orders on earlier deportation flights. In multiple cases, Trump has stonewalled federal district judges, defied orders, and threatened impeachment. Trump and his team believe they are above the law and will continue to flaunt their power. Congress must act now to reclaim their role in our government, protect the rule of law, and stop Trump’s coup. (5calls/Wikipedia/Jessica Craven) Kilmar Armando Ábrego García On April 14th, during an Oval Office meeting with El Salvador President Nayib Bukele, both Bukele and Trump made it clear that they will not make any attempt to return Kilmar Ábrego García, the innocent Maryland father Trump’s regime knowingly sent to an infamous Salvadoran prison by mistake, despite the Supreme Court’s unanimous order for the Trump administration to make a good faith effort to do so. Also during this meeting, Trump told Bukele that “homegrown criminals are next,” and encouraged him to build more prisons. The idea of shipping US citizens to a Salvadoran gulag is not new for Trump; he and members of his administration have been discussing it openly. While they claim this would only happen to violent criminals, hundreds of Venezuelan migrants with zero criminal history have now been imprisoned indefinitely in El Salvador’s torture camp with no due process or opportunity for recourse. The administration has also been snatching students off the street, violating their constitutional rights, and unlawfully detaining and disappearing them. The Trump administration’s criminalizing of these civilians regardless of nationality or immigration status, with no evidence or due process, and trafficking them to a foreign gulag is terrifying. And while legal experts assert that deporting US citizens to El Salvador is “obviously illegal”, the administration continues to ignore the law. If they succeed in defying the courts and permanently imprisoning an innocent man like Abrego Garcia, they can and will do it to others. Anyone Trump doesn’t like will be at risk. Congress must fight against this dangerous escalation of Trump’s authoritarianism. Senator Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) announced his plans to travel to El Salvador to bring Abrego Garcia home. More legislators must join him in ensuring these violations of due process and other rights do not go unchallenged. (from 5 Calls) Oppose Efforts to Dehumanize Transgender and LGBTQ+ People On the first day of his administration, Trump signed Executive Order 14168, “Defending Women From Gender Ideology Extremism and Restoring Biological Truth To The Federal Government”. This order seeks to erase trans and nonbinary people, asserting that males and females “are not changeable.” This viewpoint ignores extensive scientific evidence. Subsequently, Trump signed additional anti-trans/LGBTQ+ executive orders: “Prioritizing Military Excellence and Readiness” not only bans transgender people from serving in the military but also insults and denies their existence entirely. “Protecting Children From Chemical and Surgical Mutilation” bans gender-affirming medical care, including puberty blockers, hormone treatments, and surgeries, for “children” under 19 (ignoring that 18-year-olds are legally adults). The prescription of puberty blockers and hormone therapy for minors is rare, and surgery is even rarer. However, these treatments have life-saving effects. “Ending Radical Indoctrination in K-12 Schooling” withholds federal funds from schools that teach “gender ideology,” “equity ideology,” or support trans and nonbinary students in social transition (such as by using their name and pronouns correctly). Furthermore, a list of priorities published to the official White House website asserts Trump plans to “bring back American values” by “establish[ing] male and female as biological reality and protect[ing] women from radical gender ideology.” These egregious attempts to demonize and erase transgender people must be resisted.
